United Way

Visibly interwoven throughout the company, UPS boasts a culture of community involvement and philanthropy. The ideology is included in the company’s mission: "We build on our legacy as a caring and responsible corporate citizen through the conduct of our people and company in the communities we serve."

A Powerful Partnership

It’s safe to say that throughout its history United Way has had few partners more committed and more effective than UPS. Since this powerful partnership began in 1982, UPS people and The UPS Foundation have contributed more than $1 billion to United Way in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.  UPS is the first United Way partner to reach the $1 billion mark.

United Way's 121-year history is built on the proven effectiveness of local organizations helping people in their own communities.  This heritage - and driving force - has sustained a special partnership between UPS and United Way.

“UPS and United Way share a common purpose to build stronger communities. Year after year, UPS employees donate their money and volunteer their time to improve the lives of others. We are a proud United Way partner and support its ongoing efforts.” ~ Ken Sternad, President of The UPS Foundation

  • For eight consecutive years, UPS and its employees led the nation in supporting United Way's annual campaign.
  • In the most recent campaign (2009 - 2010), UPS employees and retirees pledged nearly $55.9 million.
  • In the 28 years that UPS has supported the United Way, the company and its employees have donated more than $1 billion.
  • In 2002, UPS was the first company ever to donate more than $50 million in a single campaign to United Way.
  • UPS has twice won United Way's Spirit of America Award, United Way's highest national honor for corporate involvement and commitment to building better communities.

As United Way is the world’s largest human services organization, these contributions represent the vast majority of funds designated by The UPS Foundation in support of health-related organizations.

Loaned Executives

During the peak campaign season, United Way calls on its corporate partners to lend their best and brightest employees. Loaned Executives assist United Way staff in the development and implementation of workplace campaigns.

Specifically, Loaned Executives lend their expertise and energy to help United Way expand solicitation efforts, reach new markets and broaden the base of community giving. They keep fundraising costs low by maximizing staff and volunteer efforts. In return, United Way provides a unique management program that develops sales and executive leadership skills and an understanding of community organization.

Each year during campaign season, many UPS districts in the U.S. loan an executive to their community’s local United Way. These UPS managers and supervisors served as vital components to United Way’s far-reaching fundraising efforts.
